Lists of ingredients:

  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
1 small sweet yellow onion, diced
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
    2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
    ½ teaspoon salt
    ½ teaspoon black pepper
    2 Tablespoons tomato paste
    ½ cup beef stock
    1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 can (15 ounces) Green Giant® Sweet Peas, drained
1 can (15 ounces) Green Giant® Sliced Carrots, drained
1 can (7 ounces) Green Giant® SteamCrisp Niblets Corn, drained
    2 cups prepared mashed potatoes

STEPS

1 Heat ground beef over medium in a large skillet. Use a spatula to break up beef into small pieces. Cook 5 minutes. Add onion and garlic. Continue to cook 3 minutes longer.
2 Sprinkle flour, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper over beef. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring regularly.
3 Add tomato paste, stock and Worcestershire sauce. Stir until incorporated. Simmer for 3 minutes, until sauce has thickened.
4 Add sweet peas, carrots and corn. Stir well.
5 Pour mixture into a large casserole dish and top with dollops of mashed potatoes. Spread potatoes evenly.
6 Heat oven to broil on high. Broil for 8-10 minutes, or until potatoes are golden brown.

TIPS & TRICKS

To help keep your classic shepherd’s pie firm instead of falling apart, let your base filling – the simmered meat, vegetables and spices – cool before adding the mashed potatoes. This will help keep the layers separate and intact.

As far as sides go, Irish soda bread is often a popular pairing, since this traditional shepherd’s pie recipe is an Irish dish itself. Similar to many meaty mains, ground beef shepherd’s pie also balances out nicely with more vegetables or a vibrant salad.
